"When was Facebook Launched in India? Facebook History"
Facebook was initially launched in February 2004 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, But it was launched on 26 September 2006 in India. After, In 2010, Facebook opened its first office in Hyderabad. Although by then, the company had already acquired more than 15 million Indian users. WhatsApp, a personal messaging service developed by two ex-Yahoo workers, and Instagram, a specialized image sharing platform, launched in India.
After Reliance Jio in India, all of these platforms, which were already popular among the Indian masses, got massive user base growth thanks to Jio. As a result, in 2012, Mark Zuckerberg acquired the popular photo-sharing app Instagram for $1 billion. While Facebook purchased Instagram, the photo-sharing business attracted considerable interest from venture capital firms and other investors. At that time, Instagram was not making any profits but still, Facebook bought it, and today according to some estimations, Instagram produces more advertising revenue than its parent corporation.
After that, in 2014, Facebook went one step ahead and acquired an Instant messaging app called WhatsApp for $16 billion. But just after that, Facebook had to face many issues. first of all, when Facebook tried to bring ‘Free Basics’ in India to acquire more users, CIS “Center for Internet & Society” denied that by saying that “Free Basics runs against net neutrality by offering access to some sites and not others.”
Fake news was likely the most devastating issue that Facebook as a company has attempted to overcome. While the social media platform has come under fire for facilitating disinformation and hate speech, WhatsApp has felt the impact of the criticism. In July 2018, WhatsApp acted quickly to contain the damage, restricting the number of users to whom a message may be shared to five. Meanwhile, Facebook launched a mission to collaborate with fact-checkers.
After that, it was 22 April 2020 when Reliance Jio and Facebook announced their Rs 43,574 crore deal. With this deal, Facebook Acquired a 9.9% stake in Reliance Jio. According to industry analysts, the strategic collaboration aims to operationalize e-commerce and digital payments services.
On 28 October 2021, following much conjecture, Facebook, the company that owns platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has rebranded as “Meta.” During the rebranding event, Mark Zuckerberg said, “Our brand is currently so firmly linked to one product that it cannot possibly reflect all we do today, let alone in the future. Over time, I wish to be recognized as a metaverse company, and I want to base our work and identity on what we’re constructing.”
